Our choice of FLORAL MOTIF is the lilac. The lilac is a shrub that is recognized as a horticultural part of this country's early American history. In 1767, Thomas Jefferson recorded his method of planting lilacs in his garden at Monticello; and on March 3, 1785, George Washington noted that he had transplanted existing lilacs in his garden at Mount Vernon. The oldest living lilacs in North America may have been planted around 1750.

The 18th century PORTRAITURE PAINTINGS are by Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788), an Englishman born in Suffolk, England. Gainsborough emerged as a renowned artist during an era of great social change in both Great Britian and America. His artwork has been selected for our website for its beautiful depiction of 18th century women in period dress before and during the time of America's revolution. It reminds us of the English heritage of many of our Founding Fathers, and provides a flavor of the times during the period that eventually led to the founding of our country.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. has hosted an exhibition of Gainsborough's most famous paintings, among which several appear on this site.
